Sudan’s annual inflation surges to 218 percent in August

KHARTOUM, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) — Sudan’s annual inflation rate accelerated to 218.18 percent in August from 193.94 percent in July, the Central Bureau of Statistics said on Thursday.
The prices measured include food and beverages, tobacco, clothing, and footwear, along with housing, electricity, fuel, healthcare, transportation, communications, and education expenses, it added.
The bureau attributed the surge mainly to the continuation of the conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, which has disrupted supply chains and caused economic instability.
The conflict, which began in mid-April 2023, has had a devastating impact on the country’s economy, leading to soaring prices, rising unemployment, and a depreciation of the national currency. ■
